The Reilly Method and Beyond
Friday & Saturday February 5 & 6
For this historic 2-day symposium, CSOPA is proud to present modern master painters who have studied with direct disciples of the legendary teacher, Frank Reilly. It has been said that it is impossible to discern from a painter's style that he knows The Reilly Method based upon French Academic training. It is evident that his students know how to paint. Join us for these classic rules of the road to great art and liberate your technique.
"As an instructor, Frank Reilly taught 3 classes a day at the Art Students League, then drove to the Woodstock School of Art (a branch of the Art Students League, built by the CCC in the early 1930’s) to teach there. He presented 40 lectures a year, 26 of them at the Art Students League, the others at various art schools and institutes throughout the country. Subjects included color; painting the model; painting landscapes; anatomy; drawing and structure; perspective; drapery; composition; and abstraction in color and black and white. He also lectured on the history of art from the Masters to modern and illustration art. All lectures included examples and “drawings and paintings executed on the spot.” A former student noted, “Mr. Reilly could do a whole lecture on how to paint a bubble on a glass of beer.”  Reilly also taught at the Grand Central School of Art with his former teacher Frank Vincent DuMond, Illustration at the Pratt Institute, The Moore Institute in Pennsylvania, The American School of Art in New York, and founded the Frank Reilly School of Art."  (www.americanartarchives.com/reilly.htm)

Welcome to CSOPA's 5th biennial Faces of Winter Portrait Festival Festival. This Valentine tradition began at the Garden Education Center in Greenwich, moved to The Greenwich Arts Council Bendheim Galleries and Meeting Room for our last three winter festivals, and this year makes its February debut at UConn in Stamford. Why a Valentine reception? Because we believe there is no greater way to honor someone you love than with a commissioned portrait. We encourage grand opening attendees to keep this festive theme and wear something red.  Judging for cash and ribbon awards: NELSON SHANKS.

Message from Igor Babilov:
"How exciting! And what a great topic for the festival! I will certainly look forward to participating and will be happy to contribute with my knowledge and experience. Particularly in the craft of drawing, which would be important to highlight in relation to Frank Reilly’s school. Frank Reilly, as the master of his generation and the teacher in the tradition of masters before him, gave a special emphasis in his works and lessons to anatomy and drawing from life.  His drawings were based on the methods, which were taught at the renowned French, Italian and Russian academic schools of art. During my own years at the Russian Academy, drawing was the main focus of studies as the foundation for strong painting. Winning first prizes in the national academic contests, my drawings are now archived at the Academy’s permanent museum collection and my academic knowledge is what I now teach in the workshops to my students and in the demos I give to the large audiences of spectators. The knowledge of anatomy and the skill of drawing from life are two vital components in painting a human figure, which are prerequisites to working expertly, fast, and with details. Just like the Masters, I believe in mastering the skill of drawing, which in the end is the true measurement of a good painter. Given the importance of drawing, my live drawing subjects include the people from all walks of life: from car mechanics to the Heads of countries, the most recent live portrait sitter was the Pope. I believe, it would be invaluable to the participants of the event to witness a live drawing demo in the academic tradition of the masters, upon which the Frank Reilly’s school was based. I would be happy to share this in a 1 to 2 hr master drawing demonstration." (www.Babailov.com)
